RINA Consulting S.p.A. – RINA-C

Description of the organisation
RINA is a global corporation that offers a wide range of high quality tailored solutions in the Energy, Marine, Certification, Transport & Infrastructure and Industry sectors. RINA activities contribute to developing the qualitative level of the market by adopting measures to protect health and safety and to improve the well-being of society building value for future generations. RINA is the project coordinator of SunHorizon and its main role in the project will be the development of new design methodologies for H&C appliances not only based on technical normative but on local demand via a design under uncertainty approach, that will be also applied in replication strategies

Role in the Project
RINA-C will be project coordinator, leveraging its expertise in previous similar projects such as RESILIENT and SMILE. RINA-C will lead WP6 and replication activities, leveraging its technological transfer to market expertise and the promotion of the MUSE GRIDS concept.[/vc_column_text]

FUNDACION CARTIF – CAR

Description of the organisation
Fundación CARTIF is a leading Spanish Applied Research Centre in terms of R&D and technology transfer activities created in 1994. CARTIF is formed up by some 150 researchers and Energy Division is one of the three main areas of knowledge and activity. CARTIF participation in international activities is promoted through the R&D Programmes Department and has been materialised in the current participation in 47 on-going international projects, including 20 projects from H2020 (4 of them coordinated). Additionally, CARTIF is one of the founding members and main promoters of the Smart City VyP initiative carried out in the Spanish cities of Valladolid and Palencia (http://www.smartcityvyp.com).

Role in the Project
CARTIF will be involved in the design and development of the smart control for multiple energy grids. They will work in the demand modelling, attending specially at the programming of prediction algorithms that will be used in the control. Also, related to the control, they will collaborate in developing and programming the multiobjective control algorithms for maximizing the selfconsumption in the grid and allow the interaction among grids according to the planning tool strategy. In the validation stage, CARTIF will support the deployment of the control in the defined demos. CARTIF will lead WP2 related to the Smart Control.

Aalborg University – AUU

Description of the organisation
Aalborg University was created in 1974. The Department of Development and Planning at Aalborg University conducts research in different fields including Energy Planning. The Sustainable Energy Planning Research Group works with an interdisciplinary approach to sustainable energy planning combining techno-economic, geographical and socio-political aspects. On the national level strategies for the development of energy conservation, renewable energy sources and combined heat and power (CHP) have been put forward from the very start. The SEP Research group research is currently divided into three main areas of study: 1) Technical Energy System Analysis. 2) Feasibility studies 3) Public regulation viewed in the light of technological change. The Sustainable Energy Planning Research Group carries out research on the integration of renewable energy, energy scenarios for different national and international regions, and renewable energy solutions for transport. SEP research group has initiated in the Heat Roadmap Europe studies many activities relating socio-economic research and modelling of energy efficiency and energy savings, mainly in buildings, but also in the industry and transport sectors.

Role in the Project
The overarching objective role in this project is to develop a framework for assessing potential energy efficient infrastructures for local areas in terms of technical and economic feasibility in the next decades. Focus is on the interaction and integration between different renewable energy sources and different energy demands (electricity, space cooling, space heating and domestic hot water) using different energy grids. To fulfil the overarching objective, the assessment framework needs to factor in a mapping of local demands and energy resource potentials. These provide inputs to hourly energy system simulations subject to assessment criteria and other specifications developed in conjunction with project partners and local authorities. Lastly, the framework is tested on Osimo and Oud-Heverlee.

In addition, a comprehensive study will be made for the technologies needed for decarbonisation on a local/urban level. The study will include descriptions of the technologies’ state-of-the-art, both technical and economic data, based on literature reviews and other gathered data. It will also integrate descriptions of the Smart Grids (electricity, heating, gas), and guidelines for the design of such grids.

Università Politecnica delle Marche – UNIVPM

Description of the organisation
The Università Politecnica delle Marche was founded in 1969 and it is located in Ancona. The Università Politecnica delle Marche plays a key role in the region for training both Italian and foreign students. At the moment there are about 17,000 students, 545 professors and researchers, and 565 members of technical and administrative staff working on the different campuses.

UNIVPM has an important role within UNIADRION, the “Network of Universities” established with the purpose to create a permanent connection among Universities and Research centres from the Adriatic-Ionian Region. In particular, UNIVPM hosts the UniAdrion Secretariat (http://www.uniadrion.net). To date, after more than three years of H2020 (Programming 2014-2020), we have 30 EU funded projects (between H2020, Cost, JPI, ERA-NET, DG and EU agencies, Erasmus +) for a total of around 9.5 million Euro.

Role in the Project
In the project, UNIVPM team will act both as coordinator of the Italian Demo in Osimo and as research partner in developing optimization and control strategies to be implemented in the demo, and in the optimal planning of distributed energy resources.

Astea S.p.A. – ASTEA

Description of the organisation
Astea is a local utility with a majority public shareholding, which operates in the main following public sectors:

  • Distribution of natural gas (28,585 final users; Distributed natural gas: 51,592,684.00 smc),
  • Distribution of water (56,906 final Users ; 7,478,846 m3 of distributed water)
  • District Heating (1,256.00 final users;19,737 MWh of thermal Energy- 4,749 MWh of electric Power)
  • Power Plants management (2,221.00 MWh from Hydro Power Plant ; 363.00 MWh from Photovoltaic Power Plants)

Role in the Project
Astea could be involved in the project as a real demosite with the following potential key
innovations:

  • validate solutions for decarbonisation of the local energy system while ensuring a positive impact on the centralised energy infrastructure (study of Power to Heat “HP+TES” solutions coupled toCHP, RES and local DHN)
  • Optimal management of all local flexible assets (controllable DG, energy storage systems, water distribution pumping system) to reduce the dependency from fossil fuel generation and maximize renewables self-consumption level (decarbonization, operative cost reduction, efficient use of energy)
  • Assess the technical potential of Osimo in deploying demand response strategies by controlling a combination of centralized loads (water distribution pumping system), distributed loads (office buildings) and energy storage technologies (operative cost reduction)
    enhance the involvement of local energy consumers and producers, create energy communities in the development and the operation of local energy systems and test new business models

Th!nk E – THNK

Description of the organisation
Th!nk E b.v.b.a. is a Belgian R&D company on the edge between research and application. Founded in 2011 as a private initiative, Th!nk E is now a steadily growing SME initiating various national and international innovation projects all in the area of energy in building, energy systemss and smart grids. Th!nk E cooperates actively with European industry and the international research community in multiple projects.
Th!nk E exploits a unique Living Lab: a building renovated to a grid-supporting net zero energy concept with electric mobility included. Thermal and electrical storage technologies are presented and tested, different types of solar renewable energy systems are developed, evaluated and the overall building energy management system is optimised to maximize the solar fraction. Furthermore, Th!nk E is active in the Bridge cooperation where over 30 European projects on Smart Grids and Energy Infrastructure demonstrate and evaluate best practices on innovative business models, products and services to the EU policy and regulation development level.

Role in the Project
Th!nk E will be coordinating the demonstration plant in Oud-Heverlee, Belgium and managing the contact with the demonstration participants and the local administration. Th!nk E will further contribute to the sizing of electrical equipment and be in charge of teh sizing and implementation of the thermal equipment. We will further be included in the interoperability and communication issues, following the expertise of teh STORY project. Th!nk E will lead the evaluation of this demonstration.

SIEMENS GAMESA RENEWABLE ENERGY INNOVATION AND TECHNOLOGY S.L. – SGRE

Description of the organisation
SIEMENS GAMESA RENEWABLE ENERGY is a company created in April, 2017, with the merger of Gamesa Corporacion Tecnológica and Siemens Wind Power. Both companies had been developing onshore and offshore wind turbines for decades. SGRE is formed by more than 25.000 employees divided in three business units, onshore, offshore and services, which are focused on the develop and maintenance of onshore and offshore wind turbines. Moreover there is a common technology department with more than 500 engineers
developing different technological products for the business units.

Role in the Project
SIEMENS GAMESA RENEWABLE ENERGY will be involved in the design of the control of the smart control for multiple energy grids. They will work in the functional specification of the algorithm of energy dispatch for the multiple urban smart energy grids, moreover the will collaborate in the programming that algorithm. They also will be in charge of running real tests in La Plana. 

Technische Universiteit Eindhoven – TUE

Description of the organisation
Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) is a research university specializing in engineering science & technology. The Department of Industrial Engineering & Innovation Sciences (IE&IS) aims to be a leading school in the area of industrial engineering and management science as well as in innovation sciences. The mission of IE&IS is closely tied to its pioneering work in developing an engineering perspective of business processes as well as its interdisciplinary research on transitions in societies in relation to technological change. The Technology, Innovation & Society (TIS) group engages in research on the societal and economic embedding of innovation. Technological innovations offer many opportunities to address key societal challenges. However, change is not only about the mere availability of such innovative technologies, but rather requires a transformation of existing socio-technical systems. This includes changes in firm strategies, consumer behaviour, social practices, institutions and regulations, etc. Different aspects of such transition processes cannot be studied in isolation, but require a broader, systems oriented perspective. In our view, society shapes technological progress, but technological progress also shapes our society. Technologies intertwine with radical transformations in work, travel, communication, and private life.

Role in the Project
Energy systems are inherently socio-technical systems; they consist not only of physical objects and infrastructure, but also of institutions, actors, networks, and social norms, which have evolved together with the technological system itself. The team from Eindhoven University of Technology will examine the social aspects of energy systems in general, and the MUSE grid pilot projects specifically. These examinations will contribute to the proper embedding of MUSE grids into society.

Energética S.Coop. – ECOOP

Description of the organisation
EnergÉtica S. Coop. is a non-profit cooperative that develops its activity in the electricity market and whose mission is to provide its members with electricity directly coming from renewable sources as well as fostering energy efficiency and savings. It was created in 2015 and became the first renewable electricity cooperative of its region, Castilla y León. EnergÉtica S. Coop. is based on the principles of the social and solidarity economy in its ethical dimension and on sustainability in its environmental dimension. Decision-making is carried out by all its members being the participation and democratic procedures its main hallmarks.

Role in the Project
EnergÉtica S. Coop. will participate in MUSEGrids mainly for its role as electricity marketer cooperative. It will contribute to the project with a virtual demonstrator within an isolate area in which different activities will be carried out oriented to raising citizen awareness about its own energy consumption and savings by working directly with the users. Besides its social labour, EnergÉtica S. Coop. will contribute to the impacts assessment in terms of social acceptance, costs analysis and policy and financing schemes on the implementation of autonomous microgrids based on RES.

BELGISCH LABORATORIUM VAN DE ELEKTRICITEITSINDUSTRIE – EngieLab

Description of the organisation
ENGIE Laborelec is a leading expertise and research centre in electrical power technology. Drawing on the skills of 240 highly specialised engineers and technicians, the company is active on the whole electricity value chain and backs a large set of customers in the fields of generation, transmission, distribution, storage and final use, with a particular focus upon the energy transition and the 3 D’s – decentralisation, decarbonisation and digitalisation. Laborelec is today a cooperative company, with ENGIE and independent grid operators as shareholders. Thanks to its long standing servicing activities for DNO’s in Belgium and in Europe, and more broadly for the Industry, Laborelec has developed a unique set of multidisciplinary competencies on Electrical Systems related matters. This is complemented by full mastering of dynamic and transient modelling of complex Electrical Systems capabilities. LABORELEC also owns and operates its own ‘Batteries Lab’ wherein technologies are tested at cell, pack and real application levels. LABORELEC has also developed strong competencies on electrical mobility technologies, including the development and commercialisation of Smart Charging solutions.

Role in the Project
Within Muse Grids, Engie Laborelec will take up the core tasks on developing the Muse Grids control for the weak grid in the residential neighbourhood at Oud-Heverlee. The focus is on demonstrating a LEC operational strategy that includes the needed algorithms to overcome the challenges due to increasing load on already saturated lines. Engie Laborelec is further in charge of the roll out of the V2G activities and the interfacing with the residential users and neighbourhood battery.
The significative focus of Engie on LEC as a relevant, sustainable and promising model for related use cases towards its residential customers and the grid, is one of the key drivers for Engie to invest in further R&D on this topic. Engie Laborelec will therefore contribute strongly to the tasks on business models and policy. 

Galu Limited – Galu

Description of the organisation
Galu is an Irish owned company set up in 2012. We design, manufacture and supply a range of high quality thermal stores/accumulator tanks. With a highly skilled and motivated workforce we specialise in large bespoke tanks manufactured to the highest standards featuring minimal heat losses. Galu products are designed with a focus on energy efficiency , can be transported easily and arrive ready to install with minimal on site work required.

Role in the Project

  • Assist in the overall design requirements of the large tank.
  • Produce detailed drawings for project discussion.
  • Finalise how the tank is going to integrate, store and distribute the heat energy.
  • Manufacture and deliver the required tank to exacting requirements.

Duferco Energia S.p.A. – Duferco

Description of the organisation
Duferco Energia SpA is the Duferco Group’s company that operates in the Italian energy market. It was created to manage Group’s investment in hydroelectric and photovoltaic power plants, later it focused on electric energy and gas trading and selling to all market segment. In 7 years it has hired more than 200 employees at its Genoa headquarters and now it is among the top 10 leading company in the energy market in Italy with revenues at about 1 billion euro. Duferco Energia is investing resources and proficiencies in the e-mobility sector and nowadays it is one of the leading national providers of e-mobility services.
In the e-mobility market, Duferco Energia acts as a full service provider: it provides EVs charging services and it sells and installs charging stations for private and public use. Today Duferco Energia provides EVs charging services in more than 950 charging stations in Italy in more than 100 cities, even thanks to access to DSO infrastructure, its own charging network and roaming agreements.

Role in the Project
Duferco will contribute to the definition of the strategy for using EV batteries in grid balancing and to the implementation of the demonstrator. Duferco will run the demonstration, developing specific controllers and helping local users in using the integrated energy grids.

European Association for Storage of Energy – EASE

Description of the organisation
The European Association for Storage of Energy (EASE) is the voice of the Energy Storage community by having over 40 members representing electric grid operators, utilities, research, academia, and industry. EASE actively supports the deployment of Energy Storage as an indispensable instrument within the framework of the European energy and climate policy to deliver services to, and improve the flexibility of, the European energy system, contributes to building a European platform for sharing and disseminating Energy Storage-related information and, finally, supports the transition towards a sustainable, flexible and reliable energy system in Europe.

Role in the Project
EASE will lead the Work Package 8 Dissemination and Communication and contribute to other work packages through its member’s expertise. Overall, the association will perform the following tasks:

  • Organization of stakeholder workshops/working groups, other communication and disseminations tasks;
  • Analysis of the normative framework regarding storage’s integration in microgrids;
  • Promotion of policy discussion at European level about encouraging the use of energy storage in microgrids and islands, and identification of objectives and guide lines for achieving them;
    Support to Techno-economic analysis of storage’s technologies that can be used in European islands/microgrids, taking into account the normative framework, energy prices, increasing use of renewable at national level etc. (TBC)

GLEN DIMPLEX HEATING & VENTILATION IRELAND UNLIMITED COMPANY – GDHVI

Description of the organisation
Glen Dimplex Heating & Ventilation (GDHV) is the market leader in electric heating appliances in Europe. Its main business is the design, development and manufacture of professionally installed heating and ventilation systems for residential and commercial buildings. This ranges from smart electric heating systems (SETS) using the latest control and communications technologies, through to
district heating networks encompassing heat pumps, MVHR systems and a range of heat emitters.
Glen Dimplex Heating & Ventilation Ireland (GDHVI) has engineering resources, comprising of three manufacturing plants and four state-of-theart research and development facilities in Ireland. It is an expert within the area of electricity demand side response and as a result has been involved in various demonstration projects throughout Europe. GDHVI is currently coordinating the RealValue H2020 project and is also the work package leader for ‘Dissemination & Exploitation’ in RealValue.

Role in the Project
In the MUSE GRIDS project, Glen Dimplex Heating & Ventilation Ireland will be the providers of electric heating systems which will be deployed in the physical demonstrations and will provide the necessary technical support. GDHVI and GDC (see below) will also be involved in the area of Business models and social energy community aspects with the intention of sharing their hands on expertise and knowledge gained through RealValue and other projects.
Several of the key personnel working in MUSE GRIDS, are formally employed by The Glen Dimplex Creda Group which will be a linked third party to Glen Dimplex Heating & Ventilation Ireland
The Glen Dimplex Creda Group. The GDC Group is a holding company in the UK and is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Glen Dimplex Group.

MUNICIPALITY OF EILAT – EILAT

Description of the organisation
The Eilat-Eilot region has 63,000 residents and three million tourists that are visiting the city each year. As more and more people move to live in urban environments Eilat is working on better services and to create a high life quality in the city. The city is undergoing rapid economic change and large investments in the fields of energy efficiency, renewables, technology, smart infrastructure, and electro mobility. Eilat city is highly invested in energy efficiency development in the region.
Currently 75% of the city’s daytime electricity is supplied by renewable energy sources, and the city’s goal is to become energy- independent by the end of 2020.

Role in the Project
Eilat city will serve as a virtual demosite. As part of this role, Eilat will provide data about the hotels area in the city. The energy demand in a few selected hotels will be assessed. More specifically, the cooling demand and the solar potential will be measured. The existing infrastructure will be taken into account, as well as the required costs and other demands.
The developed simulations will be run in the selected district, in collaboration with AAU.

EPTISA SERVICIOS DE INGENIERÍA S.L. – EPTISA

Description of the organisation
Eptisa Servicios de Ingenieria S.L. is a multinational company specialized in engineering, consultancy, information technologies and institutional, economic and social development. Eptisa offers engineering integration design and management services for industrial and energy projects from the early stages of the project, bidding projects, construction and detailed designs, procurement stage, until construction phase, commissioning and acceptance.
In energy we are present in traditional sectors such as coal, oil&gas, nuclear or hydraulic, and within renewable energy in wind generation, photovoltaic generation, biomass and WTE

Role in the Project
Eptisa will provide for the project a “Virtual Demo site” in a rural or peri-urban district in India.
EPTISA will avail of its subsidiary there (EPTISA INDIA Private Ltd) to identify the most suitable demo site and to carry out all the necessary data collection.
In particular, EPTISA will analyse three alternative scenarios, such as:

  1. A district (preferably an industrial site) in a city with a large penetration of RES/self production
    that can be autonomous from the rest of the city grid
  2.  A district/area with a weak connection to the rest of the city grid
  3. An isolated village/area with a weak connection to the national grid

ABB of Asea Brown Boveri – ABB

Description of the organisation
ABB is a global leader in industrial technology. Based in Zurich, Switzerland, the company employs 136,000 people and operates in approximately 100 countries.
The company in its current form was created in 1988, and quickly established a presence in the US through acquisitions as well as organic growth. ABB’s success has been driven particularly by a strong focus on research and development. One of its seven global R&D centers is located Switzerland along with its Smart Grid Center of Excellence and the regional headquarters for ABB’s power-related businesses.
Today, ABB stands as a global leader in industrial technology, and the US represents its largest growth market.
As part of our commitment to technological prowess and innovation, we collaborate with about 70 universities around the world. In line with this commitment, and also to advance the academic fields that are of interest to ABB, we recently announced the ABB Research Award in Honor of Hubertus von Gruenberg, the former chairman of the board of directors at ABB. The award encourages worldclass research in our main fields of operation: power and automation, as applied in utilities, industries, and transport and infrastructure.
ABB’s Benelux’ team is leading the European transition in smart cities, local energy communities and microgrids. The set up of the Competence Centre in Brussels emphasizes the leading role the Benelux division takes on this topic.

Role in the Project
ABB will contribute to the design detailing of the Muse Grids control logic. Specifically in contributing to modelling of flexible assets and prediction of behaviour. Furthermore, ABB is the key technical partner for the neighbourhood battery in the Oud-Heverlee demonstrations and its interactions with regards to power quality improvement.
ABB will contribute to the LEC business case design, being directly in the key interest to improve the replication potential of neighbourhood batteries by valorising the full potential of such devices and monetizing the services it delivers.

SCAME PARRE – SCAME

Description of the organisation
The SCAME GROUP – founded in 1963 with the establishement of the parent company SCAME Parre S.p.A. – has around the world more than 800 partners divided into 23 associated companies, any of which linked to the italian parent company. SCAME produces over 10.000 articles that cover a wide range of systems and components for electrical wiring, in accord with the national and international regulations on safety and quality of the products.
Scame has always been sensitive to environmental issues and is constantly looking for materials, products and solutions that combine quality, safety and environmental compatibility.
Accordingly Scame is also active in the field of sustainable mobility with the production of a system of connectors and charging stations for electric vehicles -LIBERA series- that allows to charge them in the safest conditions, either in public or private environments.

Role in the Project
Scame participates in the project as a supplier of charging stations that will be studied and implemented with the following technical characteristics:

  • Realization of d.c. electric vehicles charging station with V2X characteristics
  • Realization of a.c. electric vehicle Charging station with Load management characteristics

The chargers must be integrated into the electricity grid management system through the OCPP communication protocol (Open Charge point Protocol).
An example of the system with all integrated components can be the following:
Main purpose of the project is the verification of the operation of the transfer of energy from the vehicle batteries to the network, while verifying the efficiency and reliability of the process during the charging and decharging operations.

ALTRA

Description of the company

The company ALTRA S.p.A., which is located in Genova (ITALY), is a legal entity 100% controlled by IVECO S.p.A.- CHNI. Altra was founded in 1991 and today is recognized as the Iveco centre of excellence for the development of alternative propulsion vehicles, electric and hybrid, e.g. the IVECO Daily Electric light commercial vehicle. Altra is the specialist design and production facility for Iveco vehicles with alternative traction systems. In this sense, alternative means electric, diesel-electric hybrid and fuel cell power trains, which has been the core activity of Altra for the past 15 years. Altra today is not only a research and development activity. It has the responsibility of working in Iveco in order to produce and to put into service Iveco vehicles having alternative traction systems throughout Europe, backed by the Iveco sales and service infrastructure and supported by Altra’s specific and efficient after sales support service to customers. In this way, Iveco is able to offer to the market advanced products in a cost effective manner so meeting customers’ expectations of tomorrow’s technology today.

Altra spa is a developer of hybrid and electric commercial vehicles and buses from 3.5 t to 19 t. as well CE and Ag applications; Altra does development, engineering, prototyping of electric and hybrid drive-train, power wiring, electric ancillaries, on board charging systems, management units, CAN communications and other subsystems, components mechanical and electrical integration, vehicle testing, customers service and little fleet hybrid and electric vehicles manufacturing on the basis of Iveco vehicle line up.

Role and tasks in the project

ALTRA will contribute in DC bidirectional charge for electric LCV requirements and nees definition for smart grid application, vehicle and subsystems charging system design and modifications, bidirectional DC charge LCV demonstrator build up and start up and will support activities for demonstration in Osimo smart grid.
